Sweden is a prolific exporter of fine synthpop, so I’m rarely surprised when I stumble upon a new band I like that hails from the Nordic country. Such is the case of Current One, a band I started listening to last year.
Current One is a solo project from Markus Enström, who hails from Piteå, a coastal city in the northern part of Sweden. He’s been tinkering around with music as far back as 1994 and began to release finished songs in 2020.
Over the past two years, Current One has released around 20 tracks, honing his songwriting skills and building an audience. It’s all led up to this. Today, Current One unveils his debut album, Praeludium, which is a musical term that means prelude. I suspect that means Markus has even more music on the way.
Current One first appeared on my radar with the single “Inside of Me,” which is a bombshell song full of syrupy synth riffs and dynamic vocal changes. I included it on my list of the best synthpop songs of 2021.
Markus could have easily compiled his best tracks into a full-length album. Instead, we’re treated to ten new songs, including Current One’s most recent singles, “You and I” and “I Am No Romeo.” I’m excited to dig into Praeludium and discover its riches.
