A Flock of Seagulls 2024

The legendary ’80s new wave band A Flock of Seagulls is back. Last week, they released a new song called “Some Dreams” that offers the first taste of an album they’ll unveil in 2025—their first album of original material in 30 years.

“Some Dreams” marks a strong return for the band. It’s a rollicking track that captures their signature blend of synthesizers, guitars, and monster hooks. The main synth line reminds me of the melody from their classic track, “Space Age Love Song,” my favorite A Flock of Seagulls song.

They haven’t yet revealed a title or any other details about the new album. It’s also unclear who makes up the current iteration of A Flock of Seagulls. Vocalist and keyboardist Mike Score has led the band through numerous lineup changes.

A Flock of Seagulls’ last album of original material was 1995’s The Light at the End of the World, which was only released in the U.S. and was not well received. At that point in the band’s history, Mike Score was the band’s only remaining original member.

In 2018, the band’s original lineup—Mike Score, drummer Ali Score, bassist Frank Maudsley, and guitarist Paul Reynolds—reunited to record orchestral versions of their ’80s songs with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Those orchestral versions appeared on the album Ascension, which included one “original” track that was barely a minute long and doesn’t include vocals. In 2021, they released a second album of orchestral recordings, String Theory.

A Flock of Seagulls is best known for their wild haircuts and their 1982 hit song, “I Ran (So Far Away),” Though they had plenty of other hits, including “Modern Love is Automatic” and “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You).”

The “Some Dreams” single comes with five versions, including an extended mix and an instrumental. You can find it at their record label, August Day Recordings. I haven’t been able to find it on Spotify or any other streaming platform.
