The meteoric rise of She Past Away is both unexpected and exciting. Their songs are minimalist gothic poetry sang primarily in Turkish, and they have unpronounceable titles (to English speakers) like “Kasvetli Kutlama” and “Disko Anksiyete.”
But the sounds are undeniably mesmerizing, and part of the appeal is searching Google for translations. “Disco Anxiety” is such a cool fucking title no matter what language it’s in. The band has 78,000 followers on Facebook, considerably more than darkwave contemporaries like Drab Majesty and Boy Harsher.
She Past Away has produced three studio albums so far, and today they released a remix collection called X. If you’re new to the band, it’s a nice way to catch up on their biggest songs like “Ritüel” and “Durdu Dünya.”
X is also a thrilling collection of remix artists. The names on here are unbelievable: Clan of Xymox, The Soft Moon, Boy Harsher, and none other than Front 242. They each bring their own unique sounds to She Past Away’s music.
