Nuovo Testamento is back. The Italo disco revivalists return today with their first new music in more than two years.
“Picture Perfect” is a joyous ode to desire that retains the project’s love of early ’80s pop and freestyle. It’s bright and boppy, full of shimmery synths, and reminiscent of “Holiday”-era Madonna—one of the band’s biggest influences. Here’s what they say about the song:
“It’s about a sweet, pure kind of desire—adoration, admiration, wanting, hope. It’s free of doubt and full of conviction. There’s no pain in this song, only the joy of someone’s existence and knowing that they are meant for you. It’s asking for trust until someone knows as much as you do about who you will be to one another.”
“Picture Perfect” arrives today as a stand-alone single, but it’s also the first taste of Trouble, a new EP coming July 25 on the band’s own label, Discoteca Italia. The five-track collection promises to meld freestyle, synthpop, and alt-pop into a cohesive, danceable sound.
The last time we heard new music from Nuovo Testamento was their 2023 album Love Lines, which featured standout singles like “Heat” and “Heartbeat.” I named it No. 4 on my list of the best albums of the year. Since then, they’ve been busy touring the globe and lighting up festival stages, including Cruel World and Absolution Fest.
In 2024, vocalist Chelsey Crowley lent her charismatic voice to “Losing Game,” a track by masked techno provocateur Kontravoid.
If you’re new to the band, Nuovo Testamento is a Los Angeles-based trio made up of Chelsey Crowley (vocals), Giacomo Zatti (drums), and Andrea Mantione (synth). They debuted in 2019 with the Exposure EP, which leaned darker and more coldwave. Their sound took a brighter turn on 2021’s New Earth and reached full-on ’80s euphoria with Love Lines in 2023.
