Gary Numan has a new song out today called “I Am Screaming.” It’s the second track we’ve heard from his next album, Intruder, which is due out on May 21.
Despite the title, “I Am Screaming” is a midtempo track that finds Numan delivering rather soothing vocals. It opens with somber electronic elements and a lovely keyboard melody. I actually like it more than first single “Intruder,” which contains the chugging industrial guitars that are the hallmarks of Numan’s recent work.
Intruder will be Numan’s 18th solo album. It follows a series of albums, Splinter (Songs from a Broken Mind) and Savage (Songs from a Broken World), that are among his best albums. Savage was one of my top albums of 2017.
He promises that Intruder will feature “a philosophical examination of a potential future apocalypse: the planet can only survive by purging its inhabitants.” I’m not getting any of that in the lyrics to “I Am Screaming,” which seems to reference an interpersonal relationship. But perhaps it’s part of a larger story we’ve yet to experience.
