Swedish duo Vidéo L’Eclipse, one of the finest acts in modern synthpop, released a new song on Friday called “The Piece” that will appear on their forthcoming third album.

“The Piece” is yet another elegant slice of modern synthpop that tackles big ideas with intimate detail. Robert Tingelöf’s electronics rumble with organic textures, while singer Jonas Peterson delivers an emotive performance full of warmth and vulnerability. The song offers a poignant reflection on loss and human connection in an uncertain world. I’m fascinated by this particularly striking line: “What we had in common was this fucked up century.”

The accompanying music video, made by Argentine video creator Alfiearg, captures the emotional unrest in stark black-and-white footage. It’s full of darkly lit images, cityscapes, and lonely individuals that combine into a collage of modern alienation.

Here’s how the band describes the song:

This song is a song about looking at loss through sober eyes in a period where the world makes less sense to us day by day.

“The Piece” is the follow-up to this year’s “Mercury Kiss,” which found the duo cranking up the BPM and revisiting our 1980’s fascination with artificial intelligence. I included it on my list of the year’s best songs—so far.

Both tracks will appear on Vidéo L’Eclipse’s third album, Broken Timeline. Originally planned for this year, it’s now due out in early 2027. They have yet to reveal any further details about the album, but they did share the cover art with me.

Vidéo L’Eclipse is a duo from Vallentuna, Sweden, comprised of singer Jonas Peterson and composer Robert Tingelöf. They formed in 2019 and released their debut album, Predicts, in 2021.

You can find “The Piece” on Bandcamp and Spotify.
