Swedish synthpop duo Kite released a new song today called “Don’t Take the Light Away.” It’s their first new music this year and the follow-up to a pair of songs Kite released last year, “Panic Music” and “Bocelli.” “Panic Music” topped my list of the best songs of 2022.
Here’s what Kite says about the new song…
“Don’t Take the Light Away” is about the war between energies. The struggle to keep a flickering candle burning in a very dark space.
Kite worked with an outside producer, Aasthma. Another Swedish duo, Aasthma is musicians Pär Grindvik and Peder Mannerfelt, who is sometimes credited as The Subliminal Kid. He’s worked frequently with Fever Ray, particularly on Fever Ray’s debut album and formerly as a touring member of Fever Ray’s live band. As Aasthma, they produced just one track, “Tapping Fingers,” for Fever Ray’s latest album, Radical Romantics.
Aasthma joins a short list of producers who have worked with Kite. In 2020, Blanck Mass helped Kite produce a quartet of songs that includes “Teenage Bliss” and “Hand Out the Drugs.”
In other Kite news, they’ve joined American record label Dais Records, the home of several others bands I enjoy such as Drab Majesty and Body of Light. Kite got their start on the influential Swedish label Progress Productions.
You can find “Don’t Take the Light Away” on Bandcamp and Spotify.
“Don’t Take the Light Away” lyrics
You take the sun away
You pass it on to me
You turn to dark again
I dream cause I can
Dance, let them dance for me
Tears will come down some day
Tears cause they’re hard as wood
Would you let them burn
Don’t take the light away
My hopes my dreams my life
Don’t take the sun from me
My hopes my dreams my life
Dance, let them dance into me
People vs people can’t see
Hands should be holding hands
Hands should be holding hands
Burn, let them burn for me
Fear not, cause they can not touch me
Hearts should be lost in hearts
Hearts should be lost in hearts
Don’t take the light away
My hopes my dreams my life
Don’t take the sun from me
My hopes my dreams my life
