Cold Cave has been steadily cranking out new songs this year. But it wasn’t clear if Wesley Eisold’s dark synthpop project was building momentum toward a new album. Until now. Cold Cave just announced a new album called Passion Depression that’s due out October 15, 2024.
Passion Depression will be Cold Cave’s fourth studio album, following their 2021 mini-album, Fate in Seven Lessons, which contains the blissful song “Night Light.” I included that release on my list of the year’s best albums.
Here’s how the press release describes the new album:
Cold Cave present the darkly luminous new album Passion Depression. Icy synthpop for the hot blooded.
We don’t have a full tracklist yet, but Cold Cave revealed that Passion Depression will contain eight songs, including the recent singles “She Reigns Down,” “Shadow Dance,” “Blackberries,” and “Hourglass.” The album will be available digitally and on limited edition vinyl formats that include rainbow ice, glitter, and neon vinyl.
This album cycle began in March with the release of “She Reigns Down,” an infectious track that features shadowy lyrics and echoey Sisters of Mercy darkness. Another song, “Blackberries,” arrived in May, combining more Sisters’ gloom with drum patter reminiscent of Cold Cave’s other biggest influence, New Order.
You can pre-order Passion Depression at Bandcamp.
