Absolution Fest, one of the premier synthpop and darkwave festivals in the US, dropped its 2026 lineup today. As always, the bill is stacked with artists who regularly appear on Synthpop Fanatic.

New York-based trio Bootblacks headline opening night, bringing their dense guitar and synth vibe to Tampa. Their latest album, Paradise, landed at No. 5 on my 2025 year-end list, thanks to their new electrified sound and lineup. I’m looking forward to hearing that energy live on tracks like “Can You Feel It?” and “Leipzig.”

One of the lineup’s most compelling artists is Zanias, who brings her ethereal energy all the way from Berlin. Zanias headlines Friday night. Her live shows are often described as an out-of-body experience, powered by her haunting voice and pulsing, immersive electronics.

Aesthetic Perfection closes Saturday night with an old-school set that revisits their early 2000s electro-industrial era. Expect to hear material from albums like Close to Human and A Violent Emotion, with classics like “Spit It Out” and “Inhuman” likely making appearances. I’d love to hear “The Ones,” my favorite AP song, sneak into the setlist, though it may not align with the harder-edged direction they’re promising.

The band I’m most excited about is Male Tears. Their album Paradisco was one of my favorites of 2024, and I’ve somehow missed them twice now—once due to a personal conflict and once thanks to a hurricane. Third time’s the charm.

Other standouts include Klack making their Florida debut and Chile’s Vioflesh performing their thrilling cacophony of sound. One of the lineup’s biggest surprises is Negative Format, a genre-busting act that’s been largely dormant for over a decade, with only two songs released since 2008’s Gradients album.

The festival takes place at The Orpheum, which has moved out of Ybor City. It’ll be a different vibe without the neighborhood’s roaming roosters and late-night energy. But somehow I suspect we’ll still find our way to after-parties at The Catacombs and the world-famous goth club, The Castle.

Absolution Fest 2026 is October 1 to 3 at The Orpheum in Tampa, Florida. Tickets go on sale this Friday. Last year’s event was canceled due to Hurricane Milton, so this year’s return feels particularly significant.
