Whorticulture play rough in vicious “Make Me Dead” video

One of my favorite American acts, Colorado’s Whorticulture, released a new video today for their latest single, “Make Me Dead.”

“Make Me Dead” is a sinister tune built on the sound of clanking pipes that ratchet up the tension: BING BING BONG BONG. A heavy thumping beat makes this prime dancefloor material, with melodic vocals and synth patter that give way to full-throated screaming straight out of the world of harsh electro.

The video for “Make Me Dead” features the guys in Whorticulture dressed as chaos demons, performing behind chainlink fences and lurking in a green room. There are fishnets, wide-eyed menacing glares, and very spiky hair. By the end of the song, they beat each other bloody, but walk away together smiling. It’s a sharp contrast to the Victorian vampires of their “Faust” video, offering another dimension to the band’s visual aesthetic.

“Make Me Dead” is Whorticulture’s first new song since releasing a pair of singles, “Landlocked” and “Faust,” in 2024. I included “Faust” on my list of the year’s best songs and music videos.

If you’re new to Whorticulture, the project is a dark electronic duo from Denver, Colorado, consisting of Niko Van Steenhoven and Eric Everhart. They began releasing material in 2019. Rather than producing albums, the pair prefers to carefully craft exquisite dance floor bangers. They’ve released about a dozen singles so far, including my favorite, “The Benefits of Torture,” and a striking cover of Tori Amos’s “Crucify.”

You can find “Make Me Dead” on Bandcamp and Spotify.

Whorticulture “Make Me Dead” lyrics

Life support fatality
Tasteless hunger never ends
Desperation seeping in
Aimless useless violence

Hate this love I gave for nothing
Yes, you took my life away
Hate this love I gave for nothing
Yes, you took my life away

Make me bleed, make me dead
Make me feel something different instead
Make me bleed, make me dead
Make me feel something different instead
Make me bleed, make me dead
Make me feel something different instead
Make me bleed, make me dead
Make me feel something different instead

Apathetic tragedy
Deaf frustration, soundless scream
Building hope just to destroy
Kill my mind, tear out my soul

Hate this love I gave for nothing
Yes, you took my life away
Hate this love I gave for nothing
Yes, you took my life away

Make me bleed, make me dead
Make me feel something different instead

Make me bleed, make me dead
Make me feel something different instead
Make me bleed, make me dead
Make me feel something different instead

Make me bleed, make me dead
Make me feel something different instead
Make me bleed, make me dead
Make me feel something different instead
Make me bleed, make me dead
Make me feel something different instead
Make me bleed, make me dead
Make me feel something different instead
